Exam Questions
To what extent does Propp's character theory fit 'The Lego Movie' poster campaign? (5 marks)
One way Propp's character theory fits "The Lego Movie' campaign is with the way Emmet is portrayed as the hero in the main poster. This is because he is the character at the centre of the poster, portraying him as the main character and promotes the idea of Emmet as the hero. One way Propp's character theory isn't applied is through Emmet's facial expression in his character poster. Propp's theory suggests the hero is always a strong, brave person, however in the poster he is clearly portrayed as extremely frightened. Overall, Propp's character theory is applied in ways where there is a hero, a princess, a villain and more. However, The Lego Movie challenges the hero's stereotype.
Analyse how genre codes have been used in The Lego Movie to appeal to a family audience? (10 marks)
One way genre codes have been used in The Lego Movie to appeal to a family audience is through the intertextuality used in the main poster. The main poster has a clear link to the movie 'Indepence Day', with the way it has been structured - hinting at a science-fiction element to the movie. This targets a family audience as children will enjoy seeing their favourite toys interacting on the screen, whilst adults might enjoy the science-fiction parts, perhaps hoping for more intertextual references. Another way genre codes have been used in The Lego Movie is through the addition of DC characters on the main poster. This shows to the audience that there is a high chance of superhero action in the movie. This appeals to a family audience as the DC characters used in the movie are loved by people of all ages, especially adults as it's within their generation, however it targets children as the action will be suited to them, especially being animated and in Lego-form, rather than intense sequences that are accustomed to the live-action movies. Another way the posters appeal to a family audience, is through the character poster of Emmet. The poster includes a close-up facial expression, as well as in bold, the casting of Chris Pratt for this role. This appeals to a family audience, as children will find the frightened facial expression of Emmet humorous, and adults might be intrigued in watching Chris Pratt, an actor famous at the time for his roles in movies and shows that target older audiences like 'Parks and Recreation' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy', take on an animated role. The use of having genre codes in The Lego Movie campaigning, will show audiences how their movie can attract both audiences, leading to more ticket sales, racking up more money.
