'The Lego Movie' Winter Holiday Homework

1. How was 'The Lego Movie' funded?

'The Lego Movie' had a budget of $60 million.

2. How was 'The Lego Movie' produced? What was the affect on Warner Bros.?

'The Lego Movie' was produced by Warner Animation Group, Village Roadshow Pictures, The Lego Group, Vertigo Entertainment and Lin Pictures. The affect on making a movie based on a another company's success (in this case it's Lego) means that they obviously will not claim complete profit from the film. Warner Bros. will have to give loads of money to Lego, as well as some to Vertigo Entertainment and Lin Pictures.

3. How was it distributed? How did this affect the different platforms?

'The Lego Movie' is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. This means that licensed streaming services, official DVD making companies and other platforms must get permission from Warner Bros. Pictures to be able to stream or sell the movie.

4. How was the film circulated globally? Was this successful because of the conglomerate ownership?

The conglomerate that owns 'The Lego Movie' is very rich, which successfully allows them to market and produce the movie globally, in the best ways possible.

5. How did Warner Bros. use their ownership power? Did this have an affect? Did they use their power globally?

In 2014, 'The Lego Movie' grossed around $468.8 million worldwide, and grossed $257.8 million in the USA. Over half of it's ticket sales were to viewers in the USA, meaning that the marketing of the film in the USA overpowered the rest of the world. This could be due to the budget being focused mainly on special effects and the very famous, expensive cast, rather than marketing worldwide. However, the fact the move is based on one of the most popular toys in the world, that alone could sell the film to millions worldwide.

6. How did the Warner Bros. use convergence?

7. How was 'The Lego Movie' regulated, by who and what problems did it face?

The BBFC gave 'The Lego Movie' a 'U' for 'mild fantasy violence' and 'very mild bad language'. However in the USA it was rated a 'PG', leading to some confusion for parents who were wondering how suitable the film is for their child.

  1. Benji, this is an excellent piece of homework. You have presented it neatly and provided some very strong answers - well done!

Please look at this question so that you can improve it:
How did Warner Bros use convergence?
You haven't quite understood this. Convergence lets audiences use one platform to consume various types of media texts. With this in mind, audiences were able to use their smartphones to watch the film, visit their website, visit their twitter page etc.
