Regulation

The BBFC - The British Board for Film Classification

Why are films regulated by certification?

- to make sure kids are watching only what is suitable for them
- to identify themes and genres to the audience before they watch the film
- so the audience is prepared for the film they're going to watch
- to show legal requirements for watching a movie
- having official parties for certification gain people's trust by being 'official'

What is the certificate for 'The Lego Movie' and why is this?

- rated 'U' by the BBFC
- contains 'mild fantasy violence' and 'very mild bad language'

'The Lego Movie'

1. The first movie of a new cinematic universe based in a Lego world.

2. Warner Bros.' rights to Detective Comics allows characters like Batman, Superman and Wonder         Woman to feature.

3. It's Wonder Woman first ever appearance in a feature length film and the first time Batman and Superman are in the same movie together.

'The Lego Movie' illustrates the concept of tent-pole film production. A tent-pole is a major motion picture which is expected to generate major income for a studio. This can be redistributed to fund other releases. It's success was of major importance to the studio in terms of funding other projects - such as merchandise and other films with Dan Lin, the producer.

Synergy is used as two companies work together to create a media product that is better than if one of the companies were to work on it individually.

  1. You've explored regulation to a good standard, well done!

There's a term in this powerpoint that is very important - tent-pole - ensure that you are confident with this term. Maybe place it in a different coloured font? It is likely to be a question featured in your exam.
